If you live along Florida’s Gulf Coast, you already know the trade-off: sunny skies and waterfront views, plus hurricane season every year. That’s where wind mitigation inspections come in. They document how well your home is built to handle high winds, and the report may qualify you for discounts on your insurance. Here’s what’s involved.
What Does a Florida Wind Mitigation Inspection Check?
Wind mitigation is about making a home more resistant to wind damage. Florida’s building codes include specific requirements for that, and a wind mitigation inspection records which wind-resistant features your home has, using the state’s uniform form, OIR-B1-1802.
During the inspection, we check:
- The shape and material of your roof
- How the roof decking is fastened to the trusses
- How the roof is attached to the walls (toe-nails, clips or straps)
- Whether your windows and doors are impact-rated or protected by shutters
- Whether there’s secondary water resistance under the roof covering
The job is to document what’s already there, accurately, so your insurer can apply any credits your home qualifies for.

If your home already has solid wind-resistant features, that’s good news. You may be eligible for insurance discounts, and your agent can tell you how they apply to your policy.
Why Do Wind Mitigation Inspections Matter in Florida?
Insurers give credits for features that reduce storm damage, and the wind mitigation form is how you officially show your home has them. Without a report on file, your insurer has no way to apply those credits.
There’s also the practical side: knowing how your roof is attached and how your openings are protected tells you where your home is strong and where it could use work.
If you’re buying a home, a current wind mitigation report helps you understand its features and estimate insurance costs before closing.

How Much Does a Wind Mitigation Inspection Cost?
Prices vary from inspector to inspector. At PointWise, a wind mitigation inspection is a flat $125, or $200 when combined with a 4-point inspection. There’s no extra charge for larger homes and no travel fee anywhere in our service area. See our pricing page for all of our services.
Whatever inspector you choose, make sure they’re qualified to sign the form and familiar with what Florida insurers need to see.
Is There a New Wind Mitigation Form?
Yes. The form was updated to OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 04/26), effective April 1, 2026, and inspections done on or after that date use it. Some insurers may still accept an older-form report under five years old if nothing on the home has changed. Others may require a new inspection on the current form. Check with your insurance agent.
How Do You Prepare for a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
Getting ready is straightforward:
- Gather your paperwork: permits or documentation for upgrades like a new roof or impact windows.
- Clear the way: make sure we can get to your attic access, and to your windows, doors and garage door.
- Check shutters and impact glass: make sure they’re in place and in good shape. Product labels on windows and doors are helpful.
- Plan to be home, or arrange access, in case questions come up.
During the visit, we take photos and measurements, check how your roof is attached, and document the features that help protect your home. Afterward, you get a report to pass along to your insurance company, usually the same day.
How Can You Improve Your Home’s Wind Resistance?
If the inspection shows room for improvement, these are the upgrades to talk over with a licensed contractor:
- Hurricane clips or straps to tie the roof to the walls
- Impact-rated windows and doors, or storm shutters
- A wind-rated garage door, since garage doors are often a weak spot
- Better roof deck attachment, usually addressed when the roof is replaced
- Yard cleanup: trim trees and clear loose items, because flying debris is a major threat in high winds
Ask your insurance agent which upgrades would affect your premium before you commit to one.
